My Coptic-bound Handmade Journal – documenting the last couple of months in collage

I’ve spent the last couple of months collaging, drawing, typing and stitching journal pages documenting things I’ve done, songs I’ve listened to and my mood – and made a book out of it. I’ve discovered a love for artist’s books and a love for creating hand-bound pieces of art. Here are some photos of the binding process:

And here are a few of my favourite pages:

And a close-up of the stitching on some pages:

I’m really pleased with how it turned out, because I started out with something totally different….

It was A5 and I think I was trying too hard to make each page look perfect, and I felt it was too much like a scrapbook. I just wasn’t feeling it, so I cut out a load of smaller square pages and started with that and felt much more comfortable with it – I also tried to make it less like a scrapbook, and more like a document to record how I’m feeling at a certain time, rather than events, by using collage as a free and expressive medium. I think the completed journal is much more successful than this would have been had I continued with it.

Thanks for reading,

Amy
